Let Them Eat Cake

If you made it through the gag-tastic post that I wrote on Monday, you need a pat on the back and a congratulations. I'm a romantic and am very sentimental so when I feel the love, I just can't help it, the waterworks start and they don't stop.

So after wiping the tears off my keyboard, I left work to meet the hubs for an uber romantic anniversary dinner. We drove into town and tried to eat at TWO of my favorite restaurants but it turns out that both are closed on Mondays. What the frick? I was not going to settle for Red Lobster (since that was Kevin's idea of a "fancy" restaurant, no offense RL) so we hit up a new restaurant in town called Union Station where the only good part of my meal ended up being the two glasses of wine that I consumed. I'll just leave it at that and say we probably won't be visiting there again.

The one thing I could look forward to that night, and hope it would remedy the train wreck that the  evening had turned out to be, was cake.

Our wedding cake was three tiers, each tier a different flavor covered in buttercream with embellishments of white chocolate starfish and decorated with real hydrangeas. The bottom tier was white chocolate cake with raspberry filling, the middle layer was chocolate with grand marnier chocolate mousse and the top layer was key lime. All three flavors turned out to be AMAZING. (All caps and italic worthy amazing.)

The photographer also caught about 30 pictures of me stuffing my face and licking my fingers but I won't bore you anymore than I already have.

Our cake budget only allowed us to have enough to feed all the guests, so we couldn't save the entire top tier for ourselves. Instead, we took two (gigantic size) pieces, wrapped them up tight and stuck them in the freezer to hang out for 365 days.

Monday night, I crossed my fingers and hoped I wouldn't find green slimy cake underneath all those  layers of tin foil.

A threat to all those who came across the cake...

Hmm, it didn't look too bad but the real question is, how would it taste?

I didn't spot any freezer burnt sections and nothing seemed mushy or green. This could be promising!

But you never can be too careful so we submitted Kevin to the first taste test. His verdict? As fresh as it tasted on our wedding day! I have to agree too. I was pleasantly surprised to find that our year old cake was (dare I say it) really delicious and I can't wait to get home to polish off what's left. Yes, it took us three days to eat two pieces of cake. Don't judge us.

There was only one unhappy camper the night of the cake-eating.

Pout all you want Bodie. Mine cake.

Awh, poor Bodie!

We never got to have our top layer of wedding cake. My older sister was in charge of it, and brought it to my parents house that night, all wrapped up and good to go--just like the good sister she is. Turns out, my parents and little sister are not so good. They ate the damn thing while we were on our honeymoon!

Isn't it surprising that it doesn't taste bad? I was suprised! Your cake was so pretty!! Love the new layout!

Haha - now I know what you're talking about w/ Bodie food staring! LOL The warning on the ziploc is too cute!

I'm glad your slices were still good. Friends of ours told us horror stories, so we decieded instead to just get a small cake for our anniv. But I've been reading so many positive things about 1yr anniv. froz. wedding cake lately that I'm beginning to regret it. BTW - is that PB & chocolate? OMG yum!

Oh cute I wish I would have thought to do that. When we cut the cake hubs too a big slice off our top portion so I thought it was ruined and didn't save any back...

That means I get a new cake every year right?

Awe your cake was so beautiful! Also - I absolutely love how you did your hair!

Neill's aunt made our cake for us so we ended up with a TON of leftovers. So, wedding cake is taking up probably 25% of our freezer - it just seemed wrong to throw it away. I can't wait to gorge on cake when our anniversary hits :)

Aww that's so great! Shame to hear about the restaurant experience, but the cake sounds divine!!!

Aw, I'm glad it turned out to still be yummy! Like Dancy said, we had heard so many bad things about year-old cake, that we didn't bother ordering a top tier. it wasn't really in our budget, anyway. And beause we'd heard back things, we didn't bother to save any slices. I've heard nothing but good things since, so I'm kind of regrettting it. But oh well, we're just going to order a little cake for our 1 year!

Your cake seriously sounds drool-worthy. We didn't have a cake, and I kind of regretted it on our one year anniversary. It would have been cool to take part in this tradition!

Yum. Yum yum yum I'm so hungry omg I need cake.

We didn't save our top tier for various reasons so we won't have it to enjoy in a few weeks. But we'll probably stuff ourselves silly on our anniversary with food, wine and desserts so I'm not too concerned. Ps your cake was GORGEOUS!

So fun!!! Love that it still tasted good. We had no cake at our wedding. Ice cream sundae bar instead. That cake was beautiful!

Ahhhh, how cool that it still tasted so good! I hope ours does, too!!

First off, your cake looked GORGEOUS.

Second, I'm totally digging the different flavors and how you had a bit of two of them to eat!

Third.. you're restoring my faith in year old frozen cake. I think it's because my dad & stepmom's cake was.. less than yummy a year later. Here's hoping mine and Scot's will be!!

Bahhaaha this wouldn't be a great post without Bodie gracing his little handsome face in it!!! love it! :)

We didn't have a cake at our wedding, but your post almost makes me wish we did! We will just have to pop some popcorn instead (that's what we had at ours :) )

I am so jealous that you got to eat TWO flavors! So glad that we had the exact same happy, surprising experience within one day of each other! :)

Awww you two are so cute! What a gorgeous bride you made! So glad your cake was still great even a full year later!

We got to keep the whole top tier of ours (since it was made sugar free so I could have some, none of our guests had the top). So we actually ate a wedge of cake every month on the 16th to celebrate each month of marriage. Ours was GREAT up until the last few months. We finished the last piece on our 1 year anniversary and it was dry and tasted kinda like sweet cardboard. But I'm guess that's because we didn't wrap it as carefully as the caterers did when we took the cake from the wedding. :)

1. Red Lobster may not be fancy, but you can pretty much guarantee that the price is right and the food is good! Have you had their lobster bisque soup? To die for!

2. I cannot believe you ate a 365 day old cake. Ok, so I can because you doesn't love cake (oh that's right, me), but at least you were nervous. That is a normal reaction. I'm glad it was yummy. The only cake I LOVE is cheesecake and I'm not too sure that would last a full year and still be edible.

Awww, Bodie!!! I didn't realize people for real do this (I need to take notes, b/c I've got a wedding coming up in a few months too, yay!) but I'm so excited to hear the cake was just as delightful as it was last year! Hooray! Mmmm cake...

I love the warning note on the wedding cake! Good idea, too... I recently read a post about a foreign exchange student who ate the host's saved wedding tier.

I found you on the blogroll for Wine & Cheese, Please! You can check out my blog at http://www.mynext30yrs.com :)

We ate ours on our 1 year anniversary, too and we enjoyed it! In fact, we ate the whole top layer that week--and shared some with our friends.

I was surprised at how good it was a year later (especially because we moved twice that year to 2 different states!)

Ha, my boyfriend thinks that Red Lobster is fancy too :)
