I gave in to the green monster

When I first started this blog, I told myself I wouldn't blog about politics, religion or weight loss but it seems one of those things have taken over my life recently and I can't even think of anything else to write. Oh, and if your wondering, I'm a Methodist and a Democrat with Republican tendencies. Or am I a Republican with Democratic tendencies? Either way, I'm not telling you who I vote for.

So yesterday, I got inspired to do a bit of shopping and stopped by the grocery store on my way home from the gym. My local Food Lion has crap produce so I had to turn to the pricier Martin's for my veg fix. I have been wanting some broccolini (mix between broccoli and kale, I think. Correct me if I'm wrong) for a long time and I could never find it but yesterday was a success. Along with it, I got a gorgeous eggplant, spinach, fresh strawberries and finally, soy milk.

I've never tasted a drop of this stuff but decided to give it a whirl.

When I got home from the store and Kevin saw what was I bought, I thought he was going to cry, like I'm going to force him to eat fresh vegetables. He looked at me and said "Can I still have spaghetti for dinner?" - I couldn't help busting out laughing. Yes, he had his spaghetti and I had my tilapia with broccolini.

A big problem for me while eating healthy is breakfast. I'm normally running late and have zero time to cook anything so I decided yesterday that I would try Neely's Green Monster. I made a few adjustments of my own and blended up some breakfast this morning! Here's her version, my edits in italics.

  • 2-3 cups of spinach (I used a smidge less. I was scared)
  • 1 banana
  • 2-3 strawberries (I used frozen, won't do that again. My blender wanted to die.)
  • 3/4 cup of milk (Soymilk!!)
  • truvia sweetner (I had Splenda)
  • ice (Didn't use ice since my strawberries were frozen)

{NEELY'S GREEN MONSTER. I FAILED TO TAKE A PICTURE OF MINE}

Dudes, this drink tastes like a milkshake. The vanilla soymilk was really good and I'm kind of excited to try this again tomorrow. Don't worry about it being a funky green color, you won't taste the spinach at all. Trust me, stop being a baby and just try it. It keeps you full (until you crave donuts) and gives you a ton of veggie and fruit goodness.

I heard a rumor that you're supposed to strive towards TEN servings of fruit and vegetables per day. Ha!
Maybe if there all french fries.

I might try it, but I can't get past the color. You promise it doesn't taste like spinach? I'm scared.

I make mine with vanilla greek yogurt instead of milk (not a milk fan - cow, soy or almond, blech) and it's really good!

I tried making one once and it was awful! I didn't use soy milk which might have been the problem also

Ok, I started on the Green Monsters a few years ago and love them. My husband cringes when I make them, but, you honestly can't taste the spinach. You can also add a dollop of peanut butter (YUM!) or add flavored protein powder--you can find brown rice protein powder that's fairly low cal. I sometimes add the chocolate flavor to mine. YUM.

And then I get my veggies. With a side of fries, duh.

Looks disgusting, but I might take your word for it and give it a try. Love that your Hubbs was out of sorts thinking he was going on a health kick lol! That is exactly how my Hubbs would have reacted.

It SOUNDS gross but it also so darn healthy. And if you say it tastes good, I believe you! Shakes are a great, fast way to get in that morning nutrition. Time to whip out the blender!

First of all how the eff was I not following you??? 2nd of all Im so glad you liked it! I drink one everyday in the afternoon usually with something else for lunch or for a snack after lunch! I love them and I still get excited to make it :)

Ok personally? I think it looks AND sounds delicious.. like green tea or pistachio ice cream (both of which I love)! I've had the green monster Naked drinks before, and they're more fruity than milkshake-y, but regardless.. I'm totally trying this soon!

that actually looks kinda awesome. I'm big on homemade shakes like this lately - mostly for dinner cuz I get home too late. I'm def. gonna try it. :)

Oh & P.S - if you pulse the froz. veg/fruits alone 1st, they blend easier. My machine does the same thing. :)

Ok so you lost me at green and spinach and then you told me to stop being a baby (bc I was) Going to try this I suppose, may have to make some minor adjustments but I need to get some sort of intake of health bc I cant go almost all day and only eat one time which is terrible and then I eat horrible for you foods with is double terrible!

OK - so I kind of want to try this... but I am scared. And it sounds like a lot of work. LOL Is it really worth it?!?

Yay your one the green monster bandwagon!! My favorite is 2C Spinach, 1 Bananna, 1 Medjol Date, 1.5 C Fresh Almond Milk.

I have the recipe on my blog for the almond milk - its seriously awesome.

I've been wanting to experiment with fruit/veggie smoothies lately, but... I'm scared! Especially of the green ones! It really doesn't taste like spinach?!

Ahhh good for you for being a healthy eater, maybe I should try this!

Also, I LIVE by soy milk (since I'm lactose intolerant) Silk Vanilla is my FAVE

I've been seriously considering the green monster myself, thought it would be good for the baby, and I love the addition of strawberries, something I hadn't seen in the recipe before. I'm definitely going to try this one out!

Yum! I love smoothies! And the green machine is definitely not bad. I'm cracking up at your husband's reaction - my husband does the same thing! A few nights a week I'll make all vegetable sides and he will freak out because we're not having some kind of starch (bread, rice, potatoes). He's such a meat and potatoes kind of guy!

1. Potatoes are veggies, right? So french fries count. Especially Wendys fries.
2. Spinach is the goods. I could eat spinach all day, every day.
3. Bananas, on the other hand, make me want to vomit.
4. I agree with Kevin, bring on the pasta! But I am Italian, pasta-y cravings are in my blood!
5. Unfort, I don't have a metabolism like I used to.
6. Fort, I don't care! Woooo

um..that's really green. and looks like a lot of work for someone who's lazy. is it worth it?

Mmm....you had me at milkshake! I need to try this.

hmmm... spinach that tastes like a milkshake.... Does it leave a funky after taste?

BigAppleNosh said...

Hmm, I'd totally try this!

I always make smoothies (usually a banana, cup of frozen blueberries or strawberries, some protien and water) and it's delicious.. however, I never put in veggies. I personally don't like veggies but if you promise me I won't be able to taste them, I'm going to try this!! Do you think you could do it with broccoli too and not be able to taste it? haha

Hannah said...

I LOVE Silk, but only the vanilla kinda! I think I'm going trying to try this :)

Morgan said...

Well, I like spinach, but am allergic to bananas, and don't really like milkshakes. I'm thinking I'll stick to my coffee and go-gurt for breakfast, but I'm glad you found something healthy that you like! :)

I LOVE GREEN MONSTERS! They're not only my favorite color but they are freakin' delicious! I tried them this summer and they were my fav breakfast. I love bananas with mangos and strawberries, YUMMM

You are freaking disgusting. But still my Lo...it's like the time Angela made that huge thing of tea...but for different reasons of course :)

I have been thinking about trying this, but the color! I don't know if I could do it.

Candace said...

ok, I like knowing that what I'm taking in is healthy. I love spinach and all greens, really....but I have always resisted putting them in something that I drink. My mom has been drinking barley green for years blech! Yes, I'm scared. On the other hand, I truly believe you wouldn't steer me the wrong way and if it was really nasty, you wouldn't hesitate to say so. You're a stand up kind of girl and I like that. So...you have another convert. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

weight is something i have always struggled with and cooking good, healthy foods follows/ties in with that! i will have to try your green monster recipe :)

I just don't know if I can drink something GREEN. Eek!

this sounds like the green goddess drink I've purchased in the supermarket before...which does taste surprisingly yummy :)

I bought a Naked at Whole Foods the other day. It's supposed to be like...banana and pineapple and coconut flavored and taste like a smoothie, but it has a weird, almost sandy texture and I hate the aftertaste. Boo.

YUM!!

lavenderpug said...

that sounds pretty good! are you supposed to make a fresh batch every morning? meh, i don't know why i'm asking, i can't stand cleaning my blender (have to do it by hand) so this is out of my league. sad.

Megan said...

I think it actually LOOKS good! The only part that grosses me out is the spinach. I still might try it though. I love anything that is delicious and healthy.

Sarah said...

I LOVE silk! My favorite! It's really good in honey nut cheerios...which are good for your heart!
Ryan and I have a juicer, and we juice all sorts of veggies! We go to the 'discounted-almost-expired' fruit and veggie part of our grocery store and buy some (which we then proceed to juice). Spinach color is hard to get over, but it really doesn't taste like anything! Just don't mix it with blueberries....you get a really funky color!

I'm your newest follower :). I saw your link over on Mi Chiamo Candace's blog. I'm enjoying reading all of your posts. So nice to meet you!

Pros: Green is my favorite color! I love strawberries! And bananas! Smoothies from Orange Julius are so yummy!

Cons: Spinach. I hate spinach. I have very, VERY bad childhood memories involving creamed spinach and it's scarred me for life.

Conclusion: The pros just *might* outweigh the cons and since a lot of people seem to endorse this Green Monster thing, I think I'll give it a go.

i'm buying a blender this weekend JUST for the purpose of making these. i've been seeing them everywhere and they look SO good.

MMMMMM, you don't taste the Spinach & the Soy flavor takes over, I wanna try this. The green color is kinda inviting, I'll think of it as a Starbucks Green Tea Frappuccino LOL
